Of everything we host at Nurture Play, Pastel Nagomi Art is the one that gets the most questions. There are no brushes. Soft layers of colour are blended onto the paper with your fingertips.
A gentle art from Japan
Nagomi Art comes from Japan, and “nagomi” means harmony and calm. Artists scrape soft pastels into powder, pick up the colour on a fingertip and blend it onto paper in thin, luminous layers. Simple shapes and templates guide each picture: a bright moon, a field of flowers, a quiet sea.
The finished picture has a soft, dreamy glow that is hard to get with any other medium, and easy to reach on your first try.

Slow and calming
The colour goes on slowly, in small circular motions, and the pace itself is calming. Many people describe it as art that feels like a deep breath. There is no rush and no pressure. Patience, close looking and the willingness to build an image one layer at a time are all it asks.
That pace suits children who find louder, faster activities overwhelming, and busy grown-ups who could use 90-120 minutes of quiet focus.

No experience needed
Nagomi Art asks for no drawing skill and no artistic background. Step-by-step guidance gives beginners a calm way in, and every picture still leaves room for personal choices in colour and composition. Two people can follow the same steps and finish with pictures that are unmistakably their own. Everyone takes a finished artwork home.
Nurture Nagomi at Nurture Play
Nurture Nagomi is a future workshop for everyone aged 9 and above, children and adults alike. We imagine it as a shared experience too, with a parent and child blending colours side by side.
When it launches, sessions will be led by Teacher Zane, a Certified JPHAA Nagomi Art Associate Instructor, who will take everyone from a simple first picture towards more advanced work. Nurture Nagomi is currently a preview only: no dates are planned or open for booking yet. No experience will be needed, just clean hands and a little curiosity.
